Buildings and the Built Environment

A consciously built community seeks to improve the quality of life for all the people, animals, and plants within its population. This means that old buildings are repaired and maintained, new building is done only when necessary, and the labor and materials used are beneficial to the community. Each building should improve the property it’s built on from the standpoint of more than just human aesthetics.

Each building is an asset, and they all work together to create a community that is self-sustaining and beneficial for everyone.

I will keep updates posted in chronological order. Check back often, and feel free to add anything I miss.

We had a great discussion group for the built environment. Everyone had dozens of great ideas, and I'm sure we won some kind of award for the sheer number of pages we filled up with our lists.

We had several project ideas from model communities and buildings to outreach and education. In the end we decided that the best first step would be to create a Building Resource Center to coordinate all these ideas. This way we can have a dedicated staff to do research, find materials, and really put in the time and effort that these projects will need.

The Building Resource Center should:

  • Provide public education for people looking to build or retrofit
  • Help people secure financial help and information for projects
  • Develop and coordinate model projects like co-housing and neighborhood re-development
  • Integrate Local resources (people, businesses, and materials)
  • Get the word out through a marketing and advertising campaign
  • Offer business planning services so that more people can make a living in the green building industry

We also identified a ton of local assets on our side. You can view the whole list here.

On tuesday July 31, at Surya Nagar, we continued this conversation and planning that will make this center a reality. We already have a few ideas of where we might have and office (which we plan to retrofit into a model of green building) and possible staff. We also have several different community groups already operating which we might integrate through the creation of this center.

Wall-Mart should build a new Green Wall-Mart here that dedicates this new store to the forward thinking individuals in Fairfield as the new design for its stores. I think the building should produce more than it consumes with a grass roof and natural lighting etc. I think the new super store should be LEED certified, which means our city council has to amend the city laws to require all new buildings to be LEED. Just maybe Wallmart can do what it did in Pella, IA. The Pella store is designed to look Dutch following the Dutch style of the city. I think our store can go Vastu. Being designed with a East entrance and fence etc. lol! I think it can happen!
