Buildings and Energy. Some good definitions I've found (Fred)
- What is zero net energy?
- It means buildings as a whole (but not every individual building) would generate as much energy as they use over the course a year. [This is a great overall goal for our community.]
- What is meant by energy efficiency?
- Efficiency involves reduced energy consumption for acceptable levels of comfort, air quality and other occupancy requirements, including the energy used in manufacturing building materials and in construction.
- Energy efficiency vs carbon reduction
- Using more non-fossil fuels (solar and wind) will address climate change and energy security, but cutting energy consumption is also vital.
So we must focus on both energy generation and transmission, as well as the demand side. That is, renewable energy generation, plus reducing the demand for energy thru more efficient new buildings, and more efficiencies applied to existing buildings.
