Energy

Today energy from petroleum, natural gas, and coal power our machines and cool our buildings; it is important, yet expensive and polluting, part of our lives and our environments. This status quo, however, cannot be sustained as oil increasingly defines our politics and climate change our landscapes. We must look toward tomorrow for an alternative. At the Community Futures Conferences, we will plan this change in Fairfield and also in our personal lives. We will rethink our community's energy resources and energy uses, so that we can use less and live better. Inspired by programs that already exist and other model communities, we will design an alternative energy system for Fairfield that allows both people and the environment to live well together.

The first step toward a clean, efficient, renewable energy system is education; we must learn what we can do in our own homes, communities, and regions. To facilitate this process, the interns are gathering information about everything from individual energy use to public energy policies. Take a few minutes to read through the articles. And if you become overwhelmed by the numbers, remember that sustainability is learning process. It takes time to rethink the current systems and understand the new technologies. Through that process, we not only make the world a more beautiful place, but also inspire ourselves to be more aware and active citizens. So savor the process and envision a more dynamic Fairfield!

Here, at long last, are the recommendations the committee came up with at the conference:

  • Large scale wind and solar farm
  • Sustainable biofuel production
  • Sustainability City Resource Center
  • Organizing bulk purchases of energy efficient appliances, light bulbs, Photovoltaic panels, etc.
  • Partnering with Alliant to make use of all their energy savings technologies and information
  • Selling city bonds to fund initiatives
  • Citizens Advisory Board – office attached to mayor’s office that deals with efforts and coordinates projects.
