Solar Ovens![]() Solar Collector ![]() Solar Oven Solar ovens are simple devices which collect and concentrate the sun's heat into an insulated chamber to cook food. Simply aiming a solar oven towards the sun allows it to heat up to 300°F to boil water, bake a potato, or slow cook a meal. Well-designed solar ovens can cook meals without sacrificing too much time. The basic construction of a solar oven consists of a box with a glass covered top and mirrors which direct peripheral sunlight into the box. The inside is painted black to absord maximum heat. Solar ovens are proving to be very influential in third world countries where there are no electrical grids or natural gas lines. By using solar ovens, people in the poorer countries of the world can cook their food for free without the need for wood. Traditionally, gathering wood is one of the most time-consuming tasks. With a solar oven, a tribesman could spend less time gathering wood and more time innovating. |
