We may not be ready to make this step in Fairfield just yet, but the prospects are hopeful -- electricity leaves all other renewable fuels in the dust. Here is an excerpt from an article at EV World called Drive Further on Sunlight:

Five Star Consultants' Ken Regelson recently did a study that examined these alternatives from the perspective of "yield in miles driven per acre of land per year." The results are pretty amazing and fall in line with a similar study done in Germany and published in Photon International.
Energy SourceMiles Driven/Acre Per Year
Solar Photovoltaics2,250,000
Solar Concentrating2,000,000
Wind180,000
Biodiesel (Algae)370,000
Biodiesel (Palm Oil)31,000
Biodiesel (Canola/Rape)6,100
Biodiesel (Soybean)2,400
Ethanol (Switchgrass)32,500
Ethanol (Corn)18,000
Obviously, the most efficient way to move a vehicle when measured in use of land area is converting sunlight directly into electricity to run electric cars, everything else with the exception of biodiesel derived from algae, pales by comparison.
