The transportation group will work to develop smarter ways to move the resources we need to the places where we need them. In the most radical sense, this may mean moving the places where we need things instead of the resources themselves—this is where urban design fits into the picture. The group will also discuss alternatives to our current, fossil-fuel based system—bicycles, bio-diesel, public transportation, etc.—and the programs necessary to encourage people to use them.

My Ideas so far (consider, expand, and change them, then bring your ideas to the conference)
Shut down Fairfield Square to motor traffic

  • This area is already inefficient for cars (Who would win a race around the square: a car or a bike?)
  • Make this area more enjoyable by converting roads and parking areas into green space
  • Encourage community fitness (walking, biking, etc)
  • Increase possibilities for spontaneous human interaction
  • Good for businesses: Copenhagen did the same thing, and use of the city center TRIPLED over the past 30 years (See New Lessons article linked below)

Incentives to become car-free

  • Increased home delivery of goods and availability of public storage lockers (these are primary reasons people take a car rather than bike)
  • Car leases that refund your money if you transition to car-free over the lease period
  • Increase parking fees/tolls for entering city
  • Expanding community bikes program (Residents should be able to count on the availability of yellow bikes)

Make bike travel safer and easier

  • Expand bike paths into the city
  • Make Bike Lanes on roads

Dome Bus

  • Public transportation for transcendental meditators to the domes

Terrorism, Transit and Public Safety: Evaluating the Risks is a study of safety statistics, concluding that public transit (and non-motorized transportation) is so much safer than private cars that a shift away from transit would actually be more deadly than a terrorist attack.
