Transportation

The transportation group will work to develop smarter ways to move the resources we need to the places where we need them. In the most radical sense, this may mean moving the places where we need things instead of the resources themselves—this is where urban design fits into the picture. The group will also discuss alternatives to our current, fossil-fuel based system—bicycles, bio-diesel, public transportation, etc.—and the programs necessary to encourage people to use them.

I don't have the full list of 5 action items that our group prioritized on Saturday, but I bet if we work together we can regenerate it! I remember we had the following on the list:

  1. Shared Wheels: Free bikes, e-bike rentals, car sharing, ride sharing, and institutional hitchhiking
  2. Dome bus
  3. Electric vehicle charging stations
  4. Bio-fuel co-op
  5. Pedestrian overpasses over the train tracks

Are those the five?

I think we should start with the first one because those kinds of things excluding the hitchhiking has been done already and may be more sell able as a result. Familiarity and authority seem to me to more closely associated with bikes and e-bikes. Conventional authority seems to be a necessary part of any strategy. Also buses may not be so popular for program because people may not want additional collectivization associated with going to program. People like to scatter to the winds after program and when they want to. At some point there could be a demand but for a progam bus, I doubt now.

Sounds good. I'll make the first topic into its own page: Shared Wheels.

One thing about hitchhiking. I'm an expert. I just don't know that I could train others. The 28th of October is the police bicycle auction. Can we let people know that a couple of bucks could get you a great bike?

Ben Stallings — 24 September 2007, 07:31

We can certainly spread the word through email lists, but if you want to send a press release we'd better get it cleared by the police, since it's their party. Would you please take the lead with that, Kelly?

The transportation committee now has its own mailing list. Subscribe now! Just send an email to transportation-subscribe@lists.renewfairfield.com , or go to the list info page for more options.

Here, at long last, are the recommendations our group came up with at the conference:

  • Community ride and vehicle sharing including car sharing program and expansion of yellow bike program
  • Public awareness campaign
  • Biodiesel co-op
  • Pedestrian rail overpasses – rail traffic is expected to double in the next couple of years – construct overpasses so people don’t have to wait for trains in their cars to foster more walking and biking around town.
  • Green design for square including bike parking, electric recharging station for electrical cars and bikes, edible landscaping
